Lyrics

Relfections on Iona
What can I give you but a thin place
Betwixt heaven and Earth
Where man’s sorrow meets St Peter’s Divide,
Weighed in the scales of the gannet’s dive & glide.

Ooh – ooh- ooh

Oh goodness show me a time and a place,
Betwixt the sunsets glow,
Across horizon’s line, the last rays die,
On white horses, the ocean’s tears roll by.

Ooh – Ooh – ooh

Hold me between the above and below
Betwixt the good and the bad
Then let me down Oh, let me down slow
On island sands where cool, clear waters flow

Ooh – ooh- ooh
Weighed in the scales of St Peter’s Divide
Weighed in the scales

Indian Summer
It’s been a long, long summer
This long, long summer
An Indian summer with its tired hot days,
A false promise with winter on his way

And I think about the future
With mother nature’s cold hard chill
But I know the Lord will fight for me
I need only to be still

Time to watch the swallows fly
South across the lowering sky
The sunlight takes my eyes away
From deep shadows of days gone by

And I will touch the edge of my life ….

I can hear the drum of Your heartbeat
Saying ‘come to the sound of My love’
We will walk to the tread our soft voices
Into the hush of this years cold night

But I will see You are with me -

Cry in the Dark
Written for the children at Casa Lumina, Cry in the Dark's Romanian Orphanage

I heard a cry in the dark before me
From a child deep in the night
I felt the shadow of life surround them
Let their light shine out

Don’t let the darkness be dark to you
Let the light of love reach out
Don’t let the darkness be dark to you
Let the light of love reach out

Take a deep breath in the morning of your life
Thank you Lord for seeing their plight
Thank you Lord for these pools of light
Pools of light deep in the night

Thank you Lord for my mother and father
For food and warmth, for rest and play
Thank you Lord for my brothers and sisters
In a land of peace at the break of day

Don’t let the darkness be dark to you
Let the light of love reach out
Don’t let the darkness be dark to you
Let the light of love reach out

I heard a cry in the dark before me
From a child deep in the night
I felt the shadow of life surround them
Let their light shine out

Take a deep breath in the morning of your life
Thank you Lord for seeing their plight
Thank you Lord for these pools of light
Pools of light deep in the night

Christmas came to Northumbria
And Christmas came to Northumbria
And made all the hills turn white
The stars shone clear in the frosty night
Gave light to life through winter’s cold still air

And how beautiful on the mountains are
The feet of one who brings
Good news of peace and happiness
A boy Christ born today, is King

And the moon shines down on Northumbria
Across Valleys wide and deep
Rivers freeze and the heron sleeps
The heart beats slow, in nature’s time delay

And the Golden Age of Northumbria
At Heavenfield began
The saints smiled down on the shepherd’s land
The angels sang as Christmas came to stay.

Aidan
(Written for the St. Aidan’s Day Service on Holy Island)

Sent from Iona with blessings in his hand
He arrived in Northumbria, a stranger in the land.
Gentle in his words and humble in attire
He talked to the people of a Presence divine.

Leaving far behind all worldly goods on high
He walked among the people with nothing left to hide
As grains in the sand and poor in heart and soul
The power of the Gospel, the Word to make them Whole.

And you who lack a voice inside
With nothing left to say
Lift up your hearts to Aidan
And feel his blessings today.

And if your soul is in poverty
With nothing left to give
Lift up your hands to Aidan
And take his strength to live.

King Oswald loved him for his generosity
And followed him in all things with great loyalty
Aidan was moved by his giving to the poor
And asked that his open hand would live for evermore

All along the Holy coast, the fame of Lindisfarne spread
The singing of seals, joy of prayer, devotions gently lead
Learning to talk to God through the rhythms of the tide
On an island with Cuddy duck and the solemn herons cry.

Today
And all I have to give, I give to you today
And all I have to say, I say to you today
And all I have to feel, I feel for you today, today

And everything I do, I do for you today
And everything I see, I see for you today
And everything I want, I want for you today, today

Because you are my Lord
Because you are my Lord

And everything I am, I am for you today
And everything I think, I think for you today
And everything I touch, I touch for you today, today

Because you are my Lord
Because you are my Lord

And all I want to be, I’ll be for you today
And all I want to try, I’ll try for you today
And all I want to sing, I’ll sing for you today, today

Because you are my Lord
Because you are my Lord
Because you are my Lord

Hills of Simonside
Dazzle me with a soft slow smile
Hold me in your heart
To the hills of Simonside we'll go
And linger for a while

Laugh with me, loud and long
Look at me and smile
Let hidden grouse song fill the air
As we walk o'er Coquetside

Oh the hills of Simonside
Dazzle me with a soft slow smile
And when the sun comes up over Coquetdale
We'll linger for a while
We'll linger for a while

From Ravens Heugh we'll Cheviot spy
Across the hills on high
Wild heathered valleys slopes so steep
On the top of Simonside

From Dove Crag down to Lordenshaws
Oh give me your hand to hold
Of cup and ring we'll sing our song
Of the power of ancient lore

So walk with me on Simonside
From Tosson o'er to Spylaw
Frosted ground echoes to the sound
Church bells on the valley floor.

Northumbria's Pride
How fair the hills in the bright morning light
It’s Northumbria’s pride, it’s Northumbria’s right
From Simonside o’er to Cheviot’s might
I’ll remember you when the year is new
Oh I’ll remember you when the year is new

When new born lambs play in the snows on the hills
It’s Northumbria’s pride, it’s Northumbria’s right
From Holy Isle down to Dunstanburgh’s side
I’ll remember you when the year is new
Oh I’ll remember you when the year is new

And it’s then I pledge my time to you
Oh I’ll come back to you, will you wait for me?
And it’s then I pledge my time to you
Oh I’ll come back to you, will you wait for me?

And how full the curve of the sand on the shore
It’s Northumbria’s pride, it’s Northumbria’s right
From Druridge Bay across to Hadrian’s Wall
I’ll remember you when the year is new
Oh I’ll remember you when the year is new

And when seals cry out loud in the quiet of the night
It’s Northumbria’s pride, it’s Northumbria’s right
And the pipes they play clear in the still evening air
I’ll remember you when the year is new
Oh I’ll remember you when the year is new
